Chapter 61
Richard stood up, looking at the plane that had disappeared into the sky. His eyes were red, still looking at the sky. He had lost her.
His voice was hoarse as he finally said, “I understand… I failed her.”
His heart was overwhelmed with mixed emotions. Guilt for Harriet, the pain of losing her and deep regret for everything he had done.” Richard walked out of the airport with heavy steps. The sun shone down on him, but it couldn’t dispel the haze clouding his heart.” Meanwhile, I took a nap after getting off the plane. I finally arrived in Canada. When I turned on my phone, it was flooded with missed calls from Richard. I ignored them as there was no need to respond to it any longer.
We would get divorce no matter what.
The place I arrived at was a property my family had bought for me before I got married. Richard didn’t know about it. Thanks to my leg injury, I spent three months in recovery before I could walk again.
Once I was able to walk again, I visited the flying club I had invested in years ago. This club was something I backed financially before I married Richard. Now, it had grown into a large–scale club that well–known in the aviation industry, which made me proud.
The person in charge, Oliver Smith, was thrilled to finally meet me in person.
He held both my hands tightly, his voice full of excitement as he said, “Miss Steinberg, we’ve been waiting for you! You have no idea… everything this club has become is thanks to your critical investment. We’re very grateful!“}
“In the past few years, we’ve all looked forward to your visit!”
I’smiled and replied, “Mr. Smith, you’ve worked hard. I’ve always wanted to come and see for myself, but there just wasn’t time before.“}
Oliver quickly waved his hands.
“The club has developed several new programs in the last two years. I’ll give you a full report later.“}
After our discussion, Oliver arranged for an experienced pilot to take me on a test flight. Only when I boarded the plane did I learn that the pilot’s name was Dominic Heisenberg. He was young, energetic and handsome.
Since we were both American and shared a pretty similar last name, we quickly struck up a conversation.
Dominic operated the controls skillfully and smiled as he commented, “Miss Steinberg, you’re clearly passionate about flying. You must have flown a lot before, right?“}
I nodded as I told him, “Yes. Flying has always been a dream of mine.“}
“Unfortunately, marriage came with too many responsibilities. I never got the chance.”
“What a shame,” Dominic said, looking out at the blue sky and clouds.
“Flying is so much fun.“>
It was clear he loved the skies. After the flight, Dominic offered to buy me a cup of coffee. For a moment, I froze. Suddenly, a memory of Richard flashed in my mind. Actually, it was our first encounter. That day was a rainy one.
I had just finished class and was rushing to flight school, holding my textbooks tightly. O
me with mud and water. He jumped out immediately, clearly embarrassed.
At the time, Richard was young, handsome and full of life.}
of nowhere, Richard’s car sped by, splashing
‘I’m so sorry. I drove too fast and splashed you,” he said, scratching his head, clearly flustered.§
“Let me drive you wherever you’re going, to make up for it.“}
I looked down at my soaked clothes and frowned helplessly, telling him, “Okay. Just be more careful next time.”
After class ended, I found Richard waiting outside. He said he wanted to apologize again and insisted on buying me a cup of coffee. That was the first time we met.
I never imagined we would end up married. From falling in love to getting married, everything felt so natural at the time. Back then, I naively believed he loved me. I believed it was love at first sight.
But I understood the truth this time.
I was nothing but a shield. It turned out that I became someone whom Richard used to protect Emily. The realization hurt me.!!
Emily’s family background was too far beneath what the Ford Family expected. Her family was ordinary. Her parents were honest laborers who worked hard just to make ends meet.
So, it was never meant to be.!
