Chapter 5
When I woke up again, daylight had already broken, and I found myself placed in the room next door.
A searing pain shot from my chest, and the room was empty. I felt completely drained, unable to move a muscle.
I glanced out the window–it was almost 11 AM. It was time for me to leave.
Outside, I could hear the maids chatting away.
“Last night was a once–in–a–century meteor shower, did you all see it?”
“I saw it, it was so beautiful. I heard if mates watch it together, they’ll be bound to each other for life!”
Hearing their joyful voices made a pang of regret well up in me.
What a shame, such a beautiful meteor, and I missed it.
The door creaked open. Aaron entered, carrying a bowl of oatmeal–my childhood favorite.
He remembered.
Aaron gazed at me and His voice was uncharacteristically soft. “Are you in pain? Should I call the pack doctor? Ellie’s out of danger… thanks to you.”
I nodded. “Alright.”
Noticing how pale I looked, he frowned deeply. “I spoke too harshly yesterday. But Ellie’s innocent. Our issues shouldn’t involve her. Don’t complain to my parents again.”
His words stirred a twinge of pain in my heart, but instead of explaining myself like I had in the past, I simply forced a smile.
“There won’t be a next time.”
Aaron gently adjusted the blanket for me.
“I couldn’t watch the meteor with you last night. Once the mate bond is sealed, we’ll go back to your old pack. I remember you liked Stonevale. We can
visit it after we return.”
I froze for a moment but smiled gently and replied, “There’s no need. You don’t owe me for saving Ellie. I chose to.”
Aaron looked at me, stunned, his eyes betraying a whirlwind of emotions.
“I’ve already arranged everything. Once you’re recovered, we’ll leave.”
I stared at Aaron, saying nothing further.
His grip on the bowl tightened, his injured hand trembling.
His injured hand hurt when it rained.
Even now, just holding the bowl seemed like a struggle.
A wave of sadness hit me, and I couldn’t help but ask, “Do you regret it, becoming like this just to save me?“!
Aaron’s expression remained calm.
“There’s nothing to regret. I would have done the same for anyone. As pack Alpha, it’s my duty to protect every pack member.”
My gaze dimmed, and my voice grew softer.
“When I was poisoned by the vampire, you climbed mountains to find the ice witch. Would you have done the same for anyone else?”
“Yes.”
So, there was nothing special.
Tears welled up in my eyes, but I fought to keep a smile on my face.
“Aaron, thank you for saving me, again and again. I never had a wolf, no parents either. I was so lonely, so desperate for a family, that’s why I forced you to marry me. My selfishness must have troubled you, made you suffer, didn’t it?”
But from now on, that won’t happen again.
He wouldn’t have to leave his beloved, be forced into sealing the mate bond with me, and we wouldn’t torture each other for ten years, nor would he die at

thirty.
This time, he would be fine.
Aaron seemed flustered, but Clara burst in before he could speak.
“Alpha, Ellie has woken up. She’s so desperate to see you that she refuses to eat anything.”
Aaron’s face lit up with a smile. He glanced at me and stood to leave.
“I’ll be back soon.”
“Aaron,” I called out to him, a bright smile on my face, “I’m sorry, and I wish you nothing but the best for the rest of your life. Enjoy it.”
Aaron looked confused, a sense of unease in his eyes. “Why are you saying such things? I’m just going to see Ellie and I’ll be back soon. Eat something, and wait for me to come back. I have something to say to you.”
With that, he left.
It was almost 11 AM. I slowly got out of bed.
The pack doctor came to check on me and prescribed some medicine.
I smiled gratefully. “I’ll take the medicine. Thank you, and please tell Alpha that I’m going to Stonevale. Ask him to take care of himself and not worry Jabout me.”
After Aaron finished with Ellie, he hurried back to the packhouse.
But when he entered, no one was there. He asked, “Where’s Ava? She hasn’t fully recovered. Where did she go?”
Before the maid could respond, his Beta rushed in, panic–stricken.
“Alpha, there’s a rogue ambush at the pack’s border. Some pack members are injured, but it’s not serious. However, Ava–who just donated blood–has
lost too much and is… dead.”
