Chapter 9
The plane climbed into the sky, bound for foreign shores. In all of Crown City’s vastness, the disappearance of one ordinary family would go completely unnoticed.
Meanwhile, Damien was with Ophelia, holding her as they watched a movie together. A strange sensation of panic flared in his heart.
He felt empty and hollow, as if something significant had been lost forever in this moment. Ophelia noticed his distraction and looked up at him. ” What’s wrong?”
“Nothing. It’s probably just my imagination.” Damien shook his head and smiled, holding her even tighter.
“Hmph! Being absent–minded when you’re with me? I’m going to punish you!”
She playfully caused mischief on him, tickling him randomly, until she wore herself out.
“What! You’re not ticklish at all.”
Damien chuckled softly. “If that punishment doesn’t work, then let’s try a different one.”
With that, he scooped her up and tossed her onto the bed. The two rolled around together, laughing and playing.
At some point, their playful movements took on a different tone. They drew closer and closer until finally their lips met.
The room was filled with passion. They stayed wrapped up together for three days straight. But Damien went from initial satisfaction to growing bored, Jbecoming somewhat disinterested.
Ophelia had tried every novel approach imaginable, yet Damien remained distracted throughout. It wasn’t that he was tired of these activities—he was getting tired of her as a person.
Constantly being around the same person was rather dull. Most importantly, Celeste hadn’t sent him any messages in a long time.
She was doing exactly as he wished–not disturbing him during the days he wasn’t with her. This was clearly what he had wanted, yet something about it left a bad taste in his mouth.
Damien glanced at his phone. In his chat history with Celeste, their conversations had somehow gone from endless exchanges to pitifully few. Their most recent phone call was several days ago during that auction incident.
He frowned, an inexplicable anger rising in his chest. He said he didn’t want her to disturb him, so she really wasn’t going to do anything at all? Did she even remember that she was his wife?
Damien opened Celeste’s chat countless times, hoping to see a message from her at any moment, but there was always nothing. He hesitated, unsure whether he should call her.
Before he could decide, Ophelia suddenly covered his eyes with her hands. “Guess what surprise I prepared for you!”
She pretended to be hiding a surprise, but her body in a thin lace nightgown subtly brushed against his neck, full of seductive intent.
Damien didn’t react in time and accidentally touched the screen, dialing Celeste
“Sorry, the number you have dialed is not in service…”
The mechanical female voice reached both their ears, and they both froze.
“Whatever it is can wait!” Damien impatiently pushed Ophelia behind him and called Celeste’s number again in disbelief.
However, it was the same voice, the same message.
“How is this possible?” His mind went blank, unable to understand what had happened.
Ophelia glanced at the contact name and pretended to console him, “Damien, maybe Ms. Wilde is just busy with something, or maybe she’s angry with you and jealous of me, so she deliberately canceled her phone number to make you worry and come looking for her.
“She’s still your wife, so where could she go? What could possibly happen? She’s probably at home right now waiting for you to come and coax her.”
