Chapter 67
But why did Evelyne talk about a love letter and say it was related to that person?
Diana fell into a long silence. On the other end of the phone, Evelyne finally sensed something was off and quickly explained.
“Um… I’m sorry. Back then, Charlie gave you a birthday gift. I was the one who returned it on your behalf without telling you.”
“A birthday gift?” Diana was even more confused now.
Weren’t she and Charlie only recently acquainted?
However, Evelyne mistook her confusion for a form of blame and was instantly overwhelmed with guilt.
Evelyne said sheepishly, “Diana, I didn’t mean anything by it. The thing is, it wasn’t just a birthday gift. It was clearly a confession gift. And that just happened to be around the time you and Vincent officially went public.
I thought I shouldn’t let anything interfere with your relationship, so I took it upon myself to pretend to be you and return it.”
“Ugh!” Evelyne suddenly smacked her forehead.
“If I’d known how things would turn out, I never would’ve done that! Charlie is actually a great guy. I heard he’s been single his whole life and never even had a scandal. For someone so young and successful in business, that’s a rare trait. He’s basically flawless.
“When his father cheated and his mother passed away from depression, he didn’t hesitate to cut all ties with the Scott family. He gave up everything that came with being the Scott family heir and completely severed ties with Mr. Scott.
“That alone shows his values. At least he’d never pull the kind of cheating nonsense Vincent did. And the way he clawed his way up after leaving the Scott family and still managed to earn a place in Heyton’s competitive scene is an impressive feat.”
Evelyne was a chatterbox. Once she started, it was hard to stop.
Diana didn’t interrupt and just let her go on while listening in silence.
“Thinking about it now, I must’ve been blind back then,” Evelyne continued passionately. “Let’s put aside their capabilities for a moment. Just by looks alone, Charlie beats Vincent hands
down.
“Don’t you think he has that boyish charm, even after everything he’s been through? He feels kind of like a gentle dad–type boyfriend with a youthful vibe. He’s like a walking woman magnet!”
Evelyne was getting way too excited.
“Why don’t you just divorce Vincent and fall into Charlie’s arms already?”
What the heck was she even on about now? Diana felt a headache forming.
“I’ve never met him before. I really don’t think I ever knew him. That so–called love letter must’ve been a misunderstanding, or maybe some sort of prank.”
Diana wasn’t that confident about herself, nor did she believe Charlie could be interested in her.
After all, the two of them had virtually zero history together.
After wrapping up a few work–related matters, Diana ended the cali.
As she moved slightly, her eyes accidentally caught a glimpse of the back of her hand. She froze, staring at her ring finger.
Where was her ring? How did she lose it?
Diana frowned and thought hard. It must’ve been left on the bathroom counter.
She immediately went downstairs to look for it, but to her surprise, someone beat her to it.
“Ms. Jackson, that belongs
Lo
o me. Please return it.” Diana’s voice was devoid of emotion as she stared straight at the person before her blankly. Gabriella had her back turned to her, holding the dazzling diamond ring in her hand. Upon hearing that, she slowly turned around with a smile on her lips.
“Oh, so this belongs to you?” Gabriella asked with a seemingly innocent smile.
Diana stepped forward and extended her hand, her palm open and facing up toward Gabriella.
Gabriella glanced at the ring, then raised her brows and giggled. Her voice was soft and sugary.
“But Diana… this ring is so pretty. What should I do? I really, really like it.“.
As soon as she said those words, Diana’s pupils contracted sharply.
