Chapter 213
After Jonathan returned to the country, he kept dodging the lawyer’s calls.
However, no matter how hard he tried to avoid it, the legal notice still landed in his hands.
He stood before the floor–to–ceiling window, gripping the document so tightly the paper crinkled under his fingers.
Outside, a torrential rain poured down, mirroring the gloomy state of his heart.
“Mr. Zander, Ms. Lancaster hopes to finalize the divorce proceedings as soon as possible.”
The lawyer’s voice was calm and professional through the video call. “If you continue to delay, we must take legal action.”
Jonathan loosened his tie, his throat dry and aching. “Tell her. I need a few more days to think “%
“Mr. Zander,” the lawyer adjusted his glasses. “Ms. Lancaster made it clear she won’t see you again. No matter how long you stall, the outcome won’t change.”
As the screen went black, Jonathan hurled his phone at the wall
The sound of it shattering echoed in the empty villa, much like his fragmented sanity at that moment 3
For three consecutive days, Jonathan locked himself in his room.
Expensive bottles of liquor were emptied one after another, but they couldn’t extinguish the burning pain in his chest.
Wendy wanted to see him, but he told her to get lost.
He didn’t want to see Wendy with her pregnant belly, it would only remind him again and again that I had left him because of that child. On the fourth moming, he was jolted awake by the piercing sound of the doorbell.
The hangover headache felt like someone was hammering his temples. He staggered to open the door and found his old housekeeper standing there.
“Sir, your father wants you to go to the hospital.” The housekeeper frowned at his disheveled appearance. “He has a check–up today!”
A cold shower barely managed to clear Jonathan’s head
He wore a suit but couldn’t tie his tie properly
I used to do these things for him.
Jonathan impatiently tossed the tie e aside and went straight out the door.
At the hospital, when he opened the ward door he froze
A young woman sat beside his father’s bed, carefully peeling an apple.
She wore a soft beige sweater, her black hair tied in a simple bun. The curve of her face was so familiar that it sent chills down Jonathan’s spine.
“Jonathan, you’re here?” she looked up and smiled gently.
That smile made Jonathan’s heart clench. The woman’s eyes, that expression, were simply like…
His father’s voice yanked him back to reality. “What’s with you? Tie’s undone, clothes wrinkled, can’t survive without Daphne, huh? What are the housekeepers for?”
Jonathan nodded stiffly, not even registering what his father had scolded him fors
When his father remarried, he hadn’t paid close attention to his new stepmother’s appearance before because he was far away and was wholly focused on his impending divorce.
Now that he saw her, he realized she was terrific, the type his father liked.
“Your complexion looks temible,” Yvonne said with concem, looking at him. “Should we call a doctor to take a look?”
“No need,” Jonathan refused curtly, but faltered momentarily when she offered him the apple.
This angle… was too similar
Seeing his dazed expression, Yvonne smiled at him questioningly.
Jonathan suddenly stood up. Tm going out for a smoke.”X
He pulled out his phone with trembling hands at the end of the corridor!
The screen was still displaying the message he had sent me yesterday. [Daphne, I saw someone who looks a lot like you.
The message showed as read, but there was no reply!!
He sent another one Can we meet again? Just once ]
The message he sent was like a stone sinking into the sea.
Jonathan stared at the screen until his eyes ached
