The sunlight was blinding. I stood in the courtyard, taking deep breaths, trying to calm the churning emotions in my chest My phone rang at that moment. The screen showed Julian’s name.
“Daphne, I’m back in the country,” his warm and steady voice came through the speaker. “Where are you staying?
Only then did I realize a problem: My family’s old home had been sold years ago and I no longer had a home in this city
“Don’t say a hotel, Julian interrupted me, his tone leaving no room for refusal, “I have an apartment at Blue Garden, Come stay with me.”
He paused, then softened his tone. “We’re used to being roommates anyway. A few more days won’t make a difference.” Hooked up at the imposing gate of the Zander residence, suddenly feeling incredibly weary. “Okay” I said.
Hanging up the phone, I took one last look at this place that held so many memories before heading towards the taxi, waiting by the roadside without looking back.
Jonathan woke up from a nightmare in the Zander residence again, with a thin layer of sweat on his forehead.
I stood in the sunlight in his dream, smiling at him like in high school. My eyes were full of warmth.|
But when he reached out to touch me, I vanished. All that was left was silence and darkness.
He imitably grabbed the bottle of liquor from the bedside table and took a swig. The alcohol burned his throat, but couldn’t extinguish the restlessness in his heart.
Ever since I rejected him last time, his emotions had become increasingly difficult to control and his unwillingness had grown stronger?
He was unwilling to accept that I could leave so freely, without feeling any regret for our ten years of relationship.3
Light footsteps came from the hallway. Jonathan looked up and saw Yvonne standing in a silk nightgown at the door, holding a glass of
warm water.
“Nightmare again?” she asked softly, walking over and placing the glass by his bed.
In the moonlight, her eyes looked remarkably like Daphne’s.
That curve, that gaze, was almost indistinguishable from the real thing.
Jonathan knew what she was up to. This stepmother of his, two years younger than him, had been scheming for Zanders‘ wealth since the day she mamed in 8
But every time he saw those eyes, all logic fell apart.l
Yvonne sat beside him, her fingers gently massaging his temples. “Let me give you a massa
Her fingertips were tremendous and smelled faintly of roses.
Jonathan closed his eyes, letting her touch gradually tum from soothing to suggestive.
When her lips brushed his neck, he suddenly grabbed her wrist “Enough.”
Yvonne chuckled softly. She did not back away, but she leaned closer to him, “You clearly want it,” she said
Her breath tickled his ear!“Just like last time
With alcohol and desire boiling in his veins, Jonathan’s self–control snapped.
He flipped over and pinned her beneath him, his movements rough as if punishing someone.
But the woman beneath him showed no shame, instead moaning even more enticingly.
In the hallway, Wendy stood hidden in the shadows, clutching her pregnant belly. Her nails dug deep into her palms.
She stared at the faint light under the main bedroom door, listening to the sounds from inside. Jealousy nearly drove her mad.
“It’s okay – ”
She lowered her head and stroked her belly, comforting herself. “At least I have the baby…. the Zander Family’s eldest grandson.” Dean had promised her that he would make Jonathan marry her as long as she could hold on until then,
A few days later I was organizing documents for the lawsuit in my overseas apartment when the doorbell rang.
Looking through the peephole, I was shocked to see Yvonne outside, dressed in high–end designer clothes and flawless makeup. “Ms Daphne, long time no see,” she greeted me with a smile as if we were old friends.
