Chapter 10
Just as Cameron finished packing, ready to fly out the next morning to Kiverton to bring Simone back, Madeline stopped him at the door.
“If Simone wants to leave, then let her,” she snapped. “Why are you chasing after her? She’s so mean and spiteful. Does she really think the Kirk family needs her?”
Cameron frowned. “Mom, don’t say that. Mona’s still my wife. I’m bringing her home.”
Madeline knew her son well. Once Cameron made up his mind about something, there was no changing it.
He had always been stubborn, and it was clear to everyone that he truly cared for Simone. Trying to talk him out of it completely wasn’t going to work. So, she softened her tone. “Cameron, it’s not that I don’t want you to bring Simone back,” she said carefully. “But if you bring her back now, what about Sylvia?
“You made a promise to her. You said that once she was fully recovered, you’d give her another child.
“You know what Simone’s like. She’s selfish and possessive. If she comes back, there’s no way she’s going to let you sleep with Sylvia again.” Cameron hesitated. “So what are you saying, Mom?”
“I’m saying, of course, we’ll bring Simone back eventually. But there’s no rush to do it now,” Madeline coaxed. “She’s not going anywhere. She’s stuck in Kiverton for work. You can go get her whenever you want.
“But while she’s away, you need to take advantage of this time and try again with Sylvia. The sooner she gets pregnant, the better. Then, once Sylvia’s expecting, you can go get Simone.
“And don’t bring her home right away either. Keep her in Kiverton for a while. Let Sylvia have the baby in peace without all the drama.
“I’m a woman too, Cameron. I know how women think better than you ever will. You can’t give Simone everything she wants. The more you spoil her, the more she’ll step all over you. Let her cool off for a while. She’ll come back softer and more obedient.”
Cameron was quiet for a long time.
But slowly, her words started to make sense.
The entire plan to have a baby with Sylvia had been done behind Simone’s back. They hadn’t dared let her find out, yet even with all the secrecy, she had reacted violently.
She had made Sylvia fall twice, and then she left home entirely, even going so far as to leave him divorce
If he brought her back now, how was he supposed to go forward with the plan?
Was he supposed to keep sneaking around? And what if she found out?
That could push her over the edge. If things escalated, their marriage might actually fall apart.
No, Madeline’s plan made more sense.
papers.
He decided not to bring Simone back just yet. While she was still in Kiverton, he planned to get Sylvia pregnant as soon as possible. Once she was expecting, then he’d go pick Simone up.
And even then, he wouldn’t bring her back right away. He intended to stay abroad with her for a year or so, let Sylvia give birth first, and only then reurn with Simone.
That way,
Simone wouldn’t see Sylvia pregnant and make another fuss, possibly causing another miscarriage.
With that decision made, Cameron arranged for someone to keep an eye on Simone in Kiverton, while he stayed home and focused on getting Sylvia pregnant as quickly as possible.
